Norwin Girls Youth Basketball Association
TRAVEL TRYOUT PROCEDURES (2024)
PREPARATION
1. Identify dates for Travel tryouts (Two dates of tryouts)
Note: Verify that there are no school conflicts (i.e. Open House)
2. Confirm dates with the evaluators
3. Confirm gym location and time(s) for above dates
4. Post Travel tryout dates on website and send e-mail blast to all registrants
5. Board members volunteer to:
A. Check players in
B. Arrange/distribute pinnies
C. Evaluate the tryouts (board members are ineligible to evaluate grades in which their children participate)
6. Travel coordinator will make copies of their (grade level) player scoring matrix** with
names and assigned numbers
** The matrix will include five (5) scoring areas: Ball Handling, Shooting, Defense, Basketball IQ &
Intangibles to simply be used as a guide for evaluating the players.
DAYS OF TRYOUT
1. Pinnies arranged numerically (From 1 to the number of players trying out) on the gym floor
2. Pinnies distributed to players by assigned number
3. Travel coordinator distributes grade level player scoring matrix to the evaluators with names and assigned numbers
TRAVEL TRYOUT & SCORING
1. Players line up numerically on end line.
2. Players will demonstrate skills in a workout chosen by the evaluators.
3. The evaluators will evaluate players in the five (5) aforementioned categories with a maximum score of
five (5) in each category.
4. At the end of the two (2) grade level tryout dates, the evaluators will rank order the players from 1 on with 1 being the best player. NO TWO PLAYERS CAN HAVE AN IDENTICAL NUMBER. The evaluator rankings will be compiled to generate an overall ranking of the players in that particular grade level.
5. Players return pinnies in numerical order.
NOTE: If a player is unable to participate in the tryout for whatever reason, (e.g. illness, injury, previous
commitment out of town), she cannot be scored in the top four (4) of her grade level.
SELECTION OF THE TEAMS/COACHES
1. The travel coordinator will receive the evaluators’ rank ordering of the players.
2. The top four (4) players automatically make the ‘A’ team.
3. The next four (4) players are guaranteed a spot on one of the travel teams if it’s been decided that the grade level will have a ‘B’ team.
4. When selecting a coach, Board Members should consider previous coaching experience in that grade from travel and/or In-House to coach the ‘A’ team. The travel coordinator will lead the discussion of coach selection with the Board and will recommend the coach for the “A” team. A simple majority vote by the Board will determine the coach of the “A team”. Board Members will also recommend which players should be considered for the “A” team. Board Members will repeat the same process for coach selection and player recommendation for the “B” team. At any time, the Board reserves the right to place players on evenly split teams, rather than “A” and “B”, if it is determined that is what is best for that particular grade level.
5. Once a coach is selected for the ‘A’ team, the travel coordinator should inform the coach and
he/she should select players to roster the ‘A’ team taking into consideration the recommendation from the travel coordinator and Board Members.
6. Once selection of the ‘A’ team is completed, a coach for the ‘B’ team is selected in the same manner as
described in 4.
7. Once a coach is selected for the ‘B’ team, the travel coordinator should inform the coach and
he/she should select players to roster for the ‘B’ team taking into consideration the recommendation from the travel coordinator and Board Members.
NOTE: Consideration should be given to the total number of girls that participated in the tryout so as to
not exclude only one (1) or two (2) girls from a travel team. This is only a suggestion.
FOLLOWING THE TRYOUT
1. After the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams are selected, the travel coordinator will inform the Board of the
player names on each of the teams.
2. All players will be contacted via email whether they were selected for a team or not.
